SS'21

From the set, to patterns and flowers that are reminiscent of the stereotypical beach umbrellas & towels or the “hawaiian shirt” Parr’s influence is clear here. There is a lot of pattern clashing, which on occasion, appears to be too much, but in the context of Shuting Qiu’s inspiration from Natalia Goncharova’s paintings , the variation in patterns adds a playful and almost surreal excitement to the presentation. This aesthetic is also clear in the looks of the models hair, that is styled to look like they’ve had a day at the beach, and makeup that is playful and colorful.

From a styling perspective, Shuting Qiu’s varying accessories like the patterned tights, gloves (and bodysuits) are all items that would be a ton of fun to incorporate in any editorial and provide a visual mimicry to the typical wetsuits seen on surfers.

Silhouettes ranged from tailored suit jackets, to asymmetrical dresses, providing an interesting narrative between the stereotypical adult tailored suit , to asymmetrical hems and colorful bedazzling/embroidery that caters to child-like excitement, especially shown in the shoes.

Shuting Qiu’s “Summer Wonderland” is a great balance of conservative, yet daring silhouettes. It’s clear that this collection, when organized by pieces, would be yearned after by any age demographic. The Shuting Qiu girl is playful, bold, and unique.
