At the nexus of underperforming commercial center and residential community, the transformation of small garden into whimsical playground named “Ninja House” made outsized impact, establishing vibrant community hub. Prior to project’s construction, the adjacent properties, including retail and residential development, felt separated , lacked identity and reason to visit.

By objectives to refresh, enhance and bring new fun, design utilizes strong geometric forms and grid framework inspired by surrounding context. It’s a modular sculptural three-dimensional forms and elements of surprise conceived as a series of “Tatami play boxes.” These boxes are extruded and feature a series of small openings, creating sense of mystery and opportunity for children to play peek-a-boo.

Boxes connect vertically and horizontally by ramp and play elements, encouraging imaginative play, allowing children to develop motor skills, muscle strength and critical thinking. Playground is a steel structure cladded in reflective aluminum as well as colorful panels.
